A Unique Chapel

At Fernwood, you'll also find a unique chapel featuring a floor-to-ceiling window that looks out onto lush greenery, flowers, and fountains. This allows kohanim to officiate services using a sound system wired to the outside, making it one of the only chapels in the world where Jewish people can participate in the service.

Gan Yarok: A Green Cemetery

Fernwood is also home to Gan Yarok, America's first green Jewish cemetery. This environmentally conscious space incorporates native California plants and a natural restoration plan. The principles guiding Gan Yarok were established by founding rabbis representing all streams of modern Judaism.

Here, you'll find biodegradable natural wood caskets, wicker caskets or shrouds, and natural stone markers instead of traditional tombstones. Graves are hand-dug, and no concrete liners or embalming fluid are used. Gan Yarok is divided into three sections: Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform/Renewal.
